Tuesdays 4pm-6pm, age: 11-15 yrs. old, class dates: 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8, 5/15, 5/22, 5/29, 6/5
Fee: $95 for 4 sessions (first 4 weeks), $190 for 8 sessions, max. sign-ups: 7
Overview:
Day 1: Basic Drawing (Still Life)
- This introduction to rendering explores the differences between drawing from life (3-dimensional
reference) and drawing from a photograph (2-dimensional reference).
- Children will do an exercise in drawing circles and straight lines and practice having better control of their drawing tool by doing variations in line weight.
- This lesson will also teach children to see objects as simplified basic shapes which will help them render the Still Life setup more accurately.
- This class is taught on the first day because the basic drawing skills acquired will be helpful
in future lessons.
Day 2: Music and Art (Synesthesia)
- This class is an introduction to Abstract art with an emphasis on mood and composition.
- Children will be able to try out a variety of media such as oil/chalk pastels, charcoal and watercolor.
- Synesthesia is a condition in which one sense, in this case, hearing is simultaneously perceived
as if by one or more additional senses, sight. Therefore, in this lesson, children will be encouraged to interpret the music that they will listen to into color, shapes and lines as well as play with a medium that would be most appropriate.
- Children will learn about the different moods that different colors and color combinations evoke.
Day 3: Science and Art (Let s Make Paint!)
- This class will teach children a simple recipe of making water-based paint.
- Children will learn about pigments and binders, including where they come from and how they are used.
- There will be an emphasis on using environmentally friendly materials such as natural pigments
easily found in their kitchens and a binder made from Gum Arabic, sap that comes from Acacia Trees, a renewable resource.
- Because natural pigments create more earthtone colors, the children will paint a landscape or
flowers from a photo/magazine reference using the water-based paint that they will make.
Day 4: Patterns and Motifs
- This class is aimed to provide children with an appreciation for details such as patterns and textures that can be found in their surroundings.
- Children will draw their bedroom from memory, one place they should be very familiar with. They will try to remember as many details as they can
like the pattern on their bed sheet or curtains or rug. They may also make up and add some patterns and textures to some areas that are just plain
if they so desire.
Day 5: Literature and Art (Illustration)
- This class encourages the children to use their imaginations as they paint a picture of a scene from a story from classic literature. They will use skills and technique they have learned from previous classes to accomplish an effective illustration (i.e. basic drawing, color and mood, patterns and textures, composition and techniques in different media).
- Children will be read wonderful and adventurous, mostly classical literature appropriate for their age.
Day 6: Self-portrait (Day 1)
- Children will learn techniques in rendering facial features.
- This class will focus on self- expression and exploration. Children will learn a little about symbolism and the significance of how one is posed in a portrait or what they are wearing and what can be seen in their background.
- Children will look at portraits done by American artists in the 1700s and 1800s as well as some by Vincent Van Gogh and contemporary artist Chuck
Close.
Day 7: Self-portrait (Day 2)
- Children will learn techniques in rendering facial features.
- This class will focus on self- expression and exploration. Children will learn a little about symbolism and the significance of how one is posed in a portrait or what they are wearing and what can be seen in their background.
- Children will learn techniques in acrylic painting.
Day 8: Mixed Media Collage
- Since this is the last class in the 8-week course, children will apply knowledge, skill and techniques
learned from previous classes.
- Children will be able to polish their training on different media and learn to incorporate them in one
piece.
- This project will give them a chance to choose their own subject matter. We will develop
and explore deeper into their ideas so as to come up with a solid piece of work.
- Children will learn about collaging and the use of symbolism and imagery to communicate an idea.
